It is the ghost of the dead Commendatore, however, who eventually gives the defiant Giovanni his comeuppance. The philandering don and his story appealed to Mozart. Frequently proclaimed “the perfect opera,” Mozart’s masterpiece (composed 1787) tells the story of the infamous ladies man Don Giovanni (baritone Mariusz Kwiecień), a master seducer who travels across Europe in pursuit of women with his resourceful servant Leporello (bass-baritone Kyle Ketelsen). To open its 50th season the Lyric chose Don Giovanni, that rare unclassifiable opera from its time: equal parts comedy, drama, and tragedy.
