It is the ghost of the dead Commendatore, however, who eventually gives the defiant Giovanni his comeuppance. Don Giovanni (Mozart) is onstage now through December 8 with Lucas Meachem and Davide Luciano splitting the title role, Matthew Rose as Leporello, Rachel. The nobleman Don Ottavio (tenor Antonio Poli) and the peasant Masetto (bass-baritone Michael Sumuel, debut), the fiancés of Donna Anna and Zerlina, vow revenge for the wrongs he has committed. Giovanni is enjoying food and wine when Elvira bursts in, imploring him to change his ways, but he ignores her pleading. Within a few hours he has also conquered the noble Donna Anna (soprano Marina Rebeka) murdered her father, the Commendatore (bass Andrea Silvestrelli) and led astray the naïve peasant Zerlina (soprano Andriana Chuchman, role debut and Ryan Opera Center alumna). Joining Kwiecien will be Ana Maria Martinez as Donna Elvira, Marina. Giovanni arrives in Seville having already seduced and abandoned the fiery Donna Elvira (soprano Ana María Martínez). 'Don Giovanni' was the first opera ever presented by then-Lyric Theatre of Chicago, for its 'calling card' season in 1954. In another first this season for Lyric Opera of Chicago, the company will present the 1886 five-act version in French of Verdi’s epic masterpiece Don Carlos a tour-de-force experience for. The philandering don and his story appealed to Mozart. Frequently proclaimed “the perfect opera,” Mozart’s masterpiece (composed 1787) tells the story of the infamous ladies man Don Giovanni (baritone Mariusz Kwiecień), a master seducer who travels across Europe in pursuit of women with his resourceful servant Leporello (bass-baritone Kyle Ketelsen). To open its 50th season the Lyric chose Don Giovanni, that rare unclassifiable opera from its time: equal parts comedy, drama, and tragedy.
